The nine-by-nine goban. You have the black stones and start; one stone at a time goes on an empty intersection. Stones of the same colour touching each other are a group, and liberties are the empty intersections next to it: a group with no liberties left is captured. You can't place a stone where it would have no liberties (unless it captures), nor immediately retake the stone just captured (ko). When there's nothing left to do you pass: two passes in a row and you count. Every stone on the board counts, plus the empty intersections surrounded only by your colour; White gets seven points of komi for playing second.
